32x36, mixed media on board.

Originally painted as Thingol and Melian for a Tolkien calendar proposal, this version added an oil-over-ink graphic border with bottom title space.  Finished for Bill's first big convention show, Nolacon II World Science Fiction Convention in New Orleans in 1988, where it won a Best Color Work ribbon.

It depicts the underground throne of The Silmarillion's Thingol, with stone trees, a blue-sky tapestry, sprays of flowers, and many relevant details, like the nightingales (Melian taught them their song) and between them, the Silmaril that ultimately leads to Thingol's death.
